People Plan Toronto Identity and Website Redesign

PPT is a grassroots citizen organization that advocates for better urban planning and promotes a strong community voice in the planning process. However, this mission is not served as well as it could be by their existing identity and website.
This was a self initiated/charity project.

- A Flexible Identity that Emphasizes the 'People' in People Plan Toronto -

When people get together to develop better places to live, the fruits of that collaboration can sometimes be an unexpected surprise. In the same way, the circular faces of the logo are designed to work in a variety of playful configurations, to both symbolize the diversity of Toronto's neighborhoods, and to make PPT more approachable as an organization.

- A Simplified Website that makes it Easier to Learn about PPT's Work and get Involved in the Process -

In the same vein, the new webdesign consolidates organization sprawl to significantly ease navigation. The design also embraces the group's preference for posting news and links using social media in order to focus the website on best presenting publication activities, and to promote upcoming events. - Improving the Accessibility and Readibility of Publications -

The group's publications are where it makes the most impact on government planning processes. The new design improves document readibility, accessibility for the visually impaired, makes content easier to read on a mobile device, and enables a more consistent user experience. With little additional effort, new publications are published to the site as web content (rather than PDFs).

My Redesign of the Kobo 7” tablet OS is intended to better differentiate the brand's future offerings from its competitors by providing a uniquely enjoyable and engaging experience centered around the acts of reading and sharing.
This project was entirely self initiated, simply because I wanted a better reading tablet user experience.

Upon unlocking the device, you are greeted by the Reading Life screen. Being a reading device, there is a strong emphasis on typography to guide the user through the interface. Additionally, the background of this screen faintly shows the last page you had open.

In Reading Life, you can see the last three awards you've unlocked for completing featured Kobo books and other achievements. Below that, the latest book you are in the process of reading is presented front and centre. Alongside the cover, you are also given a short summary of what happened in the story so far, which is very helpful when you've taken a break between reading sessions.

(If this data isn't available in the ebook you're reading, a short description of the book itself would be used instead.)

<img src="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/spacer2.png" width="501" height="40" width_o="501" height_o="40" src_o="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/spacer2_o.png" data-mid="11976912"  border="0" align="left"/>
<img src="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/2_21.jpg" width="501" height="641" width_o="501" height_o="641" src_o="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/2_21_o.jpg" data-mid="12024658"  border="0" align="left"/>

- Unlock Awards for your Favourite Books -

As mentioned earlier, my design expands Kobo's existing achievements system by expanding awards to individual books. Did you just finish that latest spy thriller about a diamond and kitten smuggling ring? Then congratulations! You've just unlocked a black cat trophy award that you can use to recommend the book to your friends, to rate and write a review of the book in the store, or to just remind you of your awesomeness.

Features like book based awards and per chapter summaries would require additional effort to encode into the XML of ebook files, but unlike Amazon, Kobo doesn't also sell movies, sneakers and lawn chairs - Kobo's focus on books and editorially curated content allows it to provide a more enjoyable quality local bookstore customer experience, rather than that of a mass-market retailer of text files.

                                                     ↓

<img src="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/spacer2.png" width="501" height="40" width_o="501" height_o="40" src_o="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/spacer2_o.png" data-mid="11976912"  border="0" align="left"/>
<img src="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/Reading-Life2.jpg" width="501" height="641" width_o="501" height_o="641" src_o="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/Reading-Life2_o.jpg" data-mid="12173336"  border="0" align="left"/>

- See What Everyone Else is Reading on the Friends List -

Continuing the theme of leveraging existing Kobo infrastructures in new ways, the friends list page lets you see what new awards your friends have gained, books your friends have bought, and what they have recommended for you. This gives customers a more integrated and oftentimes easier to find new reading material that they'll enjoy.

Of course, privacy-minded customers can opt out of sharing specific books by marking them as private.

Like Flickr or Facebook groups, users can also create and join Book Clubs centered around their favorite authors, genres or anything else.

                                                     ↓

<img src="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/spacer2.png" width="501" height="40" width_o="501" height_o="40" src_o="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/spacer2_o.png" data-mid="11976912"  border="0" align="left"/>
<img src="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/4.jpg" width="501" height="641" width_o="501" height_o="641" src_o="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/4_o.jpg" data-mid="12024703"  border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/4-1.jpg" width="501" height="641" width_o="501" height_o="641" src_o="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/4-1_o.jpg" data-mid="12024700"  border="0" align="left"/>

- An Enjoyable and Simple Reading View -

The theme of strong typography and a very reading focused experience continues into the reading view. Gone are the multiple buttons and the often finicky 'single tap to show controls' design of other ebook systems. Besides tapping left and right to change page, the only control on the page is the single understated button in the bottom centre.

Like today's Kobo, when you are on a page that other people have commented on, the button changes to a more 'filled' peach colored state. In my own testing, I found that this solution strikes a better compromise of informing the user, without taking them away from the high levels of attention and focus that reading demands.

<img src="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/spacer2.png" width="501" height="40" width_o="501" height_o="40" src_o="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/spacer2_o.png" data-mid="11976912"  border="0" align="left"/>

- Quick and Simple Viewing Adjustments and Comments -

Tapping the single button on the reading view pops up the book adjustments panel, giving you quick access to viewing controls and social commenting features in a clear and straightforward way.

                                                     ↓

<img src="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/spacer2.png" width="501" height="40" width_o="501" height_o="40" src_o="http://payload4.cargocollective.com/1/0/1410/2381295/spacer2_o.png" data-mid="11976912"  border="0" align="left"/>

- The Notifications Curtain -

Replacing the standard Android notifications pane, pulling down from the top of the screen anywhere on the system allows to you make the most common adjustments, quickly jump back to reading, monitor active downloads, and view both your Android 4.0 ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’ system notifications, and have quick access to custom app widgets.

The curtain motif makes using the pull down/up notifications panel more intuitive to less experienced users.

Using Aye Eye to snap a photo of a barcode label on a garment, brings up photos of what the clothing looks like on a model, let's you contact other friends who have also eye'd the same item, add the item to a wishlist, read a short description of the item, and let's you know what other sizes are available in store.

Browsing your wishlist in the app, lets you scroll down through thumbnails of model photos and brand names you've saved. Clicking an item on the wishlist presents a different set of data more relevant to decision making outside the store.

This app currently only exists in the planning stages. I learned a lot designing the UX/UI of the app in response to points of friction in the shopping experience, and to both field and textual research into how both men and women shop for - and evaluate - fashion.

Download a more comprehensive UI flowchart in large image format.

Redesigning Community Engagement
2011 UrbanSpace Design Competition

The aim of the competition was to redesign the city's outdated "notice of new development" signage to be clearer and to encourage citizen engagement. However, the pursuit of meaningful public participation requestired a reconsideration of the entire user experience chain. To that end, the design sacrifices legalese for clarity and to deliberately provoke opinions.

Next, we went beyond the signage to design mobile and desktop optimized web experiences where more information could be found and where productive discussions of the new development, both with other members of the community and with the planner, can efficiently take place.

Liberty Village Neighbourhood Study

The goal of this project was to conduct a comprehensive planning assessment of the Liberty Village development downtown. We analyzed the space through the popularity of different uses over time, vicinity to most-likely travel destinations, and the residential demographic profile most marketed to by the new townhomes and condominiums in the area. From this we were able to provide a comprehensive planning assessment of the area, including both challenges and opportunities for the future.

This poster was presented on a massive sized 187 cm x 250 cm board which makes presentation over the web a little difficult.

Shaping the Future of Yonge Street
Client: Downtown Yonge BIA

Downtown Yonge street is one of the most diverse and fastest growing retail area of the city. As a result, the BIA was concerned that new developments would overshadow (literally and figuratively) the vitality of the street level retail experience. In order to take a more proactive role in development, we were commissioned by the Downtown Yonge BIA to consolidate past studies, conduct a thorough analysis of current and potential street contexts, and propose urban design-based guiding principles as the first steps for the BIA towards creating its own development plan.

Borneo-Sporenburg Landscape Urbanism Study

The aim of this project was to present the work of West8's plan for the Borneo-Sporenburg of Amsterdam, and to analyze the relation of the design to both Dutch cultural sensitivities (primarily the treatment of water as public space 'parks') and to the flood engineering measures that have shaped the contemporary landscape.

This project was presented on two boards (83 cm x 60cm each) which complemented an oral presentation.

Growing Roads Project (presentation slides)

This project was a conceptual intervention created for a sustainability class. What I proposed is a a type of paved road with subtle perforations through it (the dashed lines), with large root trees at key flex points (the diamonds). As the trees grow, the roots push up and through the perforations to purposefully and gracefully transform the road from from smooth and car friendly into traffic calming cobblestone roads for pedestrians over time as the neighbourhood matures.

This project was also entered into the 2010 Resilient City Design Competition held by Cohos Evamy (Now Dialog).
